Adolf Hitler b ( Braunau am Inn , April 20, 1889- Berlin , April 30, 1945) was a political, military, painter and writer German , the Austro - Hungarian origin ; imperial chancellor from 1933 and Führer - leader - of Germany from 1934 until his death. He brought to power the German National Socialist Workers Party or Nazi Party, c establishing a totalitarian regime during the period known as the Third Reich or Nazi Germany . 1 began the World War II to the invading Polandon September 1, 1939 and is a key figure in the perpetration of the Holocaust . 2
Hitler joined the German Workers' Party , forerunner of the Nazi Party, in 1919, and became its leader in 1921. In 1923, after the pronouncement at the Bürgerbräukeller brewery in Munich , Hitler attempted to seize power through a failed coup d'état by the one who was sentenced to five years in prison. 3 During his stay in prison he wrote the first part of his book My Struggle (in German, Mein Kampf ), in which he exposes his ideology along with autobiographical elements. Released eight months later, in 1924, Hitler gained growing popular support through the exaltation of Pangermanism , theanti-Semitism and anti- communism , using his oratorical talent supported by the efficient Nazi propaganda and the mass concentrations loaded with symbolism.
He was appointed imperial chancellor ( Reichskanzler ) in January 1933 and, a year later, on the death of President Paul von Hindenburg , he proclaimed himself imperial leader and chancellor ( Führer und Reichskanzler ), thus assuming supreme command of the German state. He transformed the Weimar Republic into the Third Reich and ruled with a single party based on totalitarianism and autocracy of Nazi ideology .
Hitler's objective was to establish a New Order based on the absolute hegemony of Nazi Germany on the European continent. His foreign and internal policy was aimed at seizing Lebensraum ('living space') for the Germanic peoples. He promoted the rearmament of Germany and after the invasion of Poland by the Wehrmacht on September 1, 1939, began the World War II . With these acts, Hitler violated the Versailles Treaty of 1919, which established the conditions of peace after the First World War. 4
Under Hitler's leadership, German forces and their allies in 1941 occupied most of Europe and North Africa. Those territorial conquests gradually decreased after the Battle of Stalingrad , until 1945, when the Allied armies defeated the German army. For racial reasons, Hitler killed seventeen million people, 5 including a figure of around six million Jews, 6 and between half a million and a half Gypsies , in what was later called the " Holocaust ." 7
In the last days of the war, during the Battle of Berlin in 1945, Hitler married his former lover, Eva Braun . The 30 of April of 1945 the two committed suicide in the Chancellery bunker to avoid being captured by the Red Army .
